Shiver - Maggie Stiefvater

"I remember lying in the snow, a small red spot of warm going cold, surrounded by wolves." And so begins Grace's journey with werewolves. Grace, an 11 year old girl, has been attacked by wolves behind her home. She is saved by a wolf who has yellow eyes, who is as drawn to her as she is to him. As the years go by and Grace becomes a young woman she always looks out for her wolf. Eventually she is able to stroke his fur and when she is 17 and meets 18 year old Sam, Grace recognises him from his yellow eyes...he is her wolf. Together they explore the love they have felt for so long as different species.

Reviews:
"Elegantly written, Stiefvater's story offers a unique and interesting take on werewolf lore. Grace and Sam, the two protagonists, are mostly defined by their love for each other, but the author avoids brooding melodrama by injecting a fresh and playful sense of humor in their interactions. They have great chemistry. The characters are appealing, intelligent, and well-defined. Their willingness to use their intellects to deal with the challenges they face is refreshing."
